CNG Prices in Mumbai and Pune Rise for Second Time in Two Months

Mumbai, Pune, September 9, 2024 – Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) prices have increased again in several areas of Maharashtra, including Pune, effective from September 9, 2024. This marks the second price hike in just two months by Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL).

As of midnight, CNG rates have been revised to Rs 85.90 per kilogram in several regions. This includes areas under the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) such as Fursungi, Pisoli, and Ambegaon, as well as Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) areas like Hinjewadi and Chakan. This represents a Rs 0.90 per kilogram increase from the previous rate.

CNG, which is natural gas compressed to a high pressure of 220-250 kg/sq.cm, is primarily used in the transport sector. It is mostly composed of methane and ethane. Despite the price hike, CNG remains significantly cheaper compared to petrol and diesel. In Pune, the savings for users of CNG compared to petrol are up to 49%, and about 27% compared to diesel.

In contrast to CNG, the price of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) has remained stable. PNG prices for September 2024 are set at Rs 49.90 per Standard Cubic Meter (SCM) across various regions including PCMC, Hinjewadi, and Chakan, as well as PMC areas including Fursungi, Pisoli, and Ambegaon.

PNG provides continuous, hassle-free supply without the need for cylinder bookings, making it a convenient and cost-effective option for domestic, commercial, and industrial users. Compared to liquid fuels, PNG offers a competitive advantage due to its lower cost, minimal spillage losses, and a billing cycle that is generally monthly or bi-monthly.

The recent CNG price adjustments come as part of MNGL's efforts to align with market conditions while maintaining competitive pricing for PNG.
