Coconut Price Hike Shocks Consumers Amid Festive Season
Bangalore, October 1 – Following the rise in prices of flowers, fruits, and vegetables, coconuts—an essential ingredient for cooking and worship—have seen a significant price increase, leaving consumers in shock.
The steady increase in the cost of everyday essentials, including tomatoes, onions, and cooking oil, has been weighing on consumers. Now, as the festive season approaches, coconut prices have surged dramatically, adding further distress to households already grappling with inflation.
Just 15 days ago, the price of a kilogram of coconuts ranged between ₹30 and ₹35. However, that same kilogram now costs between ₹50 and ₹57. This marks the first major price hike in over a decade, and with the festivals of Dasara and Diwali on the horizon, vendors are predicting even higher prices in the coming weeks. Traders also warn that this price surge may persist for the next six months.
Coconuts are typically supplied to Bangalore from various parts of Karnataka, but due to extreme heat this year, there was a spike in demand for tender coconuts in northern India. As a result, there has been a decrease in coconut production, leading to this sharp price increase. With further price hikes anticipated, consumers are bracing for the continued financial strain during the festive season.
In addition to coconuts, the prices of vegetables such as onions, carrots, tomatoes, and beans have also seen noticeable increases, further compounding the burden on consumers. Here's a breakdown of the price changes:
Consumers, already frustrated by the ongoing rise in essential prices, are now shocked by the sudden spike in coconut prices, making it difficult to manage household budgets during the festive period.
