In a tragic incident in Coimbatore, a 19-year-old engineering student, A Prabhu from Mekkur village near Perundurai in Erode district, sustained serious injuries after jumping from the fourth floor of his hostel building, believing he had "superpowers." The incident occurred on Monday evening at around 6.30 pm at the Karpagam College of Engineering, located near Myleripalayam, Coimbatore. Prabhu was talking to friends on the hostel veranda of his BTech in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science when he suddenly jumped off from the building.

Believing himself to be endued with supernatural powers, he made the daring leap. He landed flat on the ground with multiple fractures in both his arms and legs besides sustaining head injuries. Other students responded immediately by rushing him to Karpagam Hospital at Othakkalmandapam for preliminary treatment. He was later shifted to Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore city for further medical care.
This sad incident has spurred discussions regarding the mental health issues among hostelites, who come from out-of-town institutions. As a matter of fact, a police report has noted that Prabhu had the most ardent believe in superman power and which led to this hazardous crime. Thus there comes a demand for more psychiatric facilities on the college grounds to help those tend to develop certain delusional conditions or suffer from psychological disorders.

Karpagam College of Engineering is one of the topmost engineering institutions in Tamil Nadu, where Prabhu was a student. As of now, no official statement has been issued by the college administration regarding the matter. However, authorities are still probing further into the incident to ensure that students are safe and well.
