No Confidence Motion details
The opposition's no-confidence motion is ready and has the necessary support, with 70 members backing it. The motion will be introduced in the Rajya Sabha, and discussions will follow. In order to remove the Chairman, at least 50 members need to sign the proposal, and this requirement has already been met.
Procedure to Remove the Rajya Sabha Chairman
In order to get the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha removed, a proposal needs to be submitted to the Secretariat signed by at least 50 members. A notice of 14 days is given after which the vote is taken in the Rajya Sabha. If the majority votes in favor, then the motion is sent to the Lok Sabha for approval. Since the Chairman is also the Vice President of India, it must be passed by both houses of Parliament in order to be effective.
What's Next?
The motion against Dhankhar could be initiated as early as Tuesday in the Rajya Sabha. In case the motion is passed, then it shall be taken up to Lok Sabha for sanction. Parliament's winter session is due to end on December 20, and this is likely to become a vital development in the session.
