COVID-19 Cases in India: Dr. Sanjay Jain Warns Against Ignoring Symptoms

As India once again sees a rise in COVID-19 cases, health experts and government authorities have urged citizens to stay alert and not confuse the virus with seasonal flu. While most new infections remain mild, the similarity in symptoms with monsoon-related illnesses is making diagnosis more complex.

States Ramp Up COVID-19 Preparedness

States like Maharashtra, Delhi, and Haryana have started stepping up COVID-19 testing, stocking essential supplies, and ensuring hospitals are prepared for any surge.

According to officials, directions have been issued to maintain adequate isolation beds, oxygen supply, PPE kits, and ICU wards. The government has focused especially on urban clusters where infection rates are higher.

ICMR: Current Variants Causing Mild Symptoms

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said the COVID-19 variants currently circulating in India are not life-threatening. These include Omicron subvariants like LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1. These strains are highly contagious but have so far only caused mild symptoms.

However, officials are not taking any chances. Surveillance and testing have been intensified in high-risk areas.

Flu or COVID? Monsoon Illnesses Create Confusion

"During the monsoon season, we are seeing a rise not just in COVID-19 cases in India but also in other respiratory illnesses like flu, ILI, and SARI," said Dr. Dhiraj Bhattad, consultant at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital.

He explained that symptoms of flu and COVID-19 are extremely similar this season—fever, sore throat, cough, cold, headache, body ache, and fatigue. However, loss of taste or smell remains a distinct COVID-19 symptom.

Doctors Warn: Don't Ignore Even Mild Symptoms

Dr. Sanjay Jain, Dean of Research at PGIMER, advised people to remain cautious, especially those who are elderly, have pre-existing health issues, or weakened immunity.

“Don’t ignore symptoms. Avoid self-medication and seek medical help immediately if you experience fever, cough, or breathing difficulties,” he said.

Doctors also cautioned against using antibiotics or steroids without proper medical guidance, as these may worsen health conditions or delay accurate diagnosis.

Public Urged to Get Tested If Symptoms Persist

Both Dr. Bhattad and Dr. Jain emphasized that early detection is key to preventing the virus from spreading further. Anyone showing flu-like symptoms should get tested, especially if the symptoms persist or worsen.

“COVID or not, timely diagnosis can save lives and stop further transmission,” said Dr. Bhattad. “Stay safe, wear masks in crowded places, and take extra care of vulnerable family members.”
