Cyclone Dana kills everything with winds at 120km, torrential rains and felled trees as she landed on shore
Cyclone Dana, which had originated over the Bay of Bengal, has barraged the Odisha coast with high-speed winds and torrential rain showers leaving behind severe destruction. As per reports from India Meteorological Department, cyclone will continue landing till this Friday morning.
The cyclone had been progressing at a speed of 15 km an hour for the past six hours before it made landfall between Bhitarkanika in Kendrapara district and Dhamra in Bhadrak district, the Indian Meteorological Department said. Winds were estimated at around 120 km an hour at the time of landfall.
Heavy Rain and Uprooted Trees
Areas of Odisha were pounded with heavy rain and strong winds two days since Cyclone Dana landed there. The storm uprooted trees and damaged roads extensively. Neighbouring state West Bengal is also getting pounded with heavy rain and strong winds. The wind gusts of Cyclone Dana reached 120 km/h when the storm hit the Odisha coast early this Friday morning. The impact has caused widespread disruption.
Wind speed 10 km/h Cyclone.
The IMD said Cyclone Dana was moving north-northwest at 10 km/hr. Reports issued by the weather authority till Friday morning at around 5:30 AM said that Cyclone Dana had made a landfall in the north coastal region of Odisha. The centre of the cyclone was around 20 km north-northwest from Dhamra in Bhadrak district and 40 km north-northwest from the Bhitarkanika Nature Camp.
Challenging 24 Hours Head
IMD has forewarned that the coming 24 hours would be crucial as the process of landfall is still undergoing. The rear part of the cyclone is still entering land. After that, it is expected to move northwards over Odisha and could even be seen as a very weakened cyclonic storm by late morning today. Large waves are being seen in the coastal areas and high tidal amplitude up to 2-3 km will surely increase safety measures on the next day.
Odisha and West Bengal on high alert It has issued a red alert for Odisha and West Bengal in connection with the cyclone warning. At present, the heavy rain along with topsaiplings and trees falling into the streets of this capital city of West Bengal has held the life largely paralyzed. Several coastal areas have suffered much and the authorities remained confused to tackle the situation.
WB CM Mamata Banerjee follows the situation over night.
Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee was on tenterhooks and spent the whole night at the state government's control room in Howrah. She is closely following all situations and getting updated with the latest situation about the storm. She has evacuated 211,234 people as a precautionary measure to safer zones in the state. More than 400 trains canceled, flights grounded Over 400 trains have been canceled, and flights in that area have been canceled due to Cyclone Dana. ISRO was monitoring the storm with information from EOS-06 and INSAT-3DR satellites. School closures in the affected zones have caused millions of people to be evacuated by authorities to a safer zone in order to minimize the impact of the cyclone. However, the actual damage can be released only in the next few hours; at least, the states battered by the attack were not left entirely without a sense of preparedness for Cyclone Dana's threats with these precautions.
