Delhi and nearby regions shiver as cold snap hits North India

Published Date:

Cold conditions in Delhi: The city of Delhi and its neighbouring regions are witnessing a cold wave these days.

The extremely chilly conditions have taken the temperatures to below four degrees Celsius for the first time this winter.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), through Safdarjung, Delhi’s base station recorded a temperature of 4.6 degrees on Sunday morning, it plunged to 3.3 degrees at Jafarpur and 3.6 degrees at Lodhi Road respectively.

The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for Delhi on Monday; there is a possibility of drizzling on December 24 or 25.

The weather department comes up with different colour-coded warnings. These depict the intensity of weather in a particular place at one point in time.

Based on these, weather warnings are issued after analysing the weather forecast data for a particular region over a few days.

A yellow weather warning indicates severely bad weather. On the other hand, it also suggests that the weather could change for the worse, this may cause disruption in day-to-day activities too.

Weather Today December 20 Cold conditions to continue

As per the IMD, ground frost conditions are likely over Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and foothills of the Himalayas.

Dense fog in isolated places is also likely over Uttarakhand. Heavy rainfall at isolated places over the Nicobar Islands.

Squally weather is also likely over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea.

IMD declares a cold day if the maximum temperature is 4.5 degrees below normal. And it announces a cold wave if the day’s low is either 4.5 degrees below normal, or is below 4 degrees.

Moreover, a biting cold wave is sweeping through Delhi these days.

This is because of a strong, dry northwesterly cold wind, as per the IMD.

Day temperatures in Delhi today (Monday) will likely be around 19 degrees Celsius since wind speeds are falling. However, night temperatures are expected to hover around 4 degrees, as per the IMD.

Weather for Tomorrow (December 21) Extreme cold conditions
