The Delhi government at an emergency meeting today suggested a slew of measures to bring down air pollution in the city.
Work-from-home for a week, a pause on construction and industrial activities and a weekend lockdown were some of the measures suggested by the AAP-led Delhi government.
The Supreme Court had ordered both the Centre and Delhi government to call an emergency meeting of states on how to tackle the issue of air pollution.
The toxic air has forced the schools to shut down, neighbouring areas of NCR as well have closed schools.
The centre and the states met on Tuesday to discuss the air pollution problem. This comes a day after the apex court raised tough questions on the choking air in the capital.
It is to be noted that work-from-home was suggested by the Delhi government for the government as well as private offices.
The court had also pointed out that there was no basis for a hue and cry about farm fires. As stubble burning contributes to only 4 per cent of the air pollution.
The court had rebuked the Delhi government for solely blaming the farm fires from neighbouring areas of Haryana and Punjab.
Moreover, Delhi’s air quality is often ranked among the world’s most polluted capitals.
A lot of factors ranging from farm waste burning, emissions from transport, coal-fired plants outside the city and other industries, as well as open garbage burning and dust are to be blamed for the toxic air issue.
