Difference Between Military Schools and Sainik Schools: Clarified by Akhilesh Yadav Yesterday
Sainik Schools
Sainik Schools in India operate under the Ministry of Defence and respective state governments. Admissions to these schools occur at the 6th and 9th-grade levels, following an entrance examination. Each Sainik School has reserved quotas for children of service personnel, students from the state of residence, other states, and Union Territories. Additionally, there are reserved seats for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).
Military Schools
Military Schools, known as Rashtriya Military Schools, have undergone name changes over time. Initially established in 1952 as the King George Royal Indian Military School, they were renamed the Military School in 1966 and later the Rashtriya Military School in 2007. Presently, they are known as Rashtriya Military Schools. Admissions are conducted for classes 6th, 9th, and 11th. For classes 6th and 9th, a common entrance test is held, while for class 11th, admission is based on the results of the 10th grade. There are five Rashtriya Military Schools located in Shimla, Ajmer, Dhrolpur, Bangalore, and Belgaum.
Differences in Admission and Fee Structure
In Military Schools, the initial purpose was to provide quality education to children of defense personnel. Over time, these schools have also admitted children of civilians. The fee structure varies based on the category of the students. For example, the annual fee for children of OR (Other Ranks), Navy, and Air Force (IAF) personnel, and ex-servicemen is ₹12,000. For JCOs (Junior Commissioned Officers), Navy, IAF personnel, and ex-servicemen, the fee is ₹18,000. For all three services and ex-servicemen, the fee is ₹25,000, while civilians are charged ₹51,000 annually. SC/ST students receive a 75% discount on the fees.
Sainik Schools, of which there are 33 across India, have a different fee structure. Admissions are conducted through entrance exams, and the fees include annual fees, hostel fees, diet fees, and other charges, totaling over ₹80,000. Fee concessions are available based on categories and specific rules.
While both Sainik Schools and Military Schools aim to provide quality education and cater to the children of defense personnel, they differ in their administrative structures, admission processes, and fee structures. Understanding these differences can help parents and students make informed decisions regarding their educational choices.
