Electricity Theft at Farrukhabad Police Station
The electricity department, headed by Sub-Divisional Officer Rajkumar Verma, was operating a checking campaign when it came to know that the police station had an arrears electricity bill of ₹45,000 and its power supply had also been disconnected. Still, this electricity was being used within the station. It was discovered after probing into that the electricity theft was going on at the police station, as the cables were by-passing the metre, and illegally drawing power from there.
It took some action on the part of the team. They disconnected the unauthorized link and confiscated the illegal cables. They also lodged a report with the higher authorities for investigation and further possible action. A video captured of this operation, showing electricity department employees climbing a pole to disconnect the power quickly went viral on social media and generated a flurry of reactions from netizens.
This viral video also prompted several sarcastic and critical comments from users. One user pointed out that electricity theft accusations are always a ploy the department uses to hide its own corruption. The officials sometimes extort money under the concept of enforcing rules. Another person doubted whether even government buildings were involved in that illegal practice. Then there was this sarcastic comment, This is Uttar Pradesh. Anything can happen here!
This raises questions about accountability and transparency in governmental institutions. This incident has continued to make waves online and has contributed significantly towards questioning the seriousness of corruption and misuse of resources in public offices.
