Clashes Between Farmers and Police in Mansa: 3 Police Officers Injured, Vehicles Damaged

A protest against the Gujarat gas pipeline project turned violent in Mansa, Punjab, as farmers clashed with the police. Approximately 300 farmers were stopped by police while en route to Bathinda. As the situation grew tense, the farmers allegedly ran over officers and assaulted them with sticks, resulting in serious injuries to three SHOs.

Violence broke out between farmers and the police in Punjab's Mansa district, with some policemen reported to be injured. The incident happened when the farmers were on their way from Sangrur to Bathinda as part of a protest against the laying of a gas pipeline by Gujarat. When the farmers approached Mansa, the police tried to stop their procession. That led to a full-blown altercation.

Reports indicate that more than 300 farmers were on their way to Bathinda when the police attempted to stop them. The situation turned ugly when farmers allegedly charged towards the police with their vehicles and assaulted the police with sticks. Three policemen, including SHOs, received serious injuries during this assault. A couple of the injured officers had broken arms, whereas others suffered major injuries.

Senior Police Officer Manpreet Singh of Mansa confirmed that the police tried all their might to stop the farmers. The first time clashes occurred in Bikhri where police were leading and later at Mansa when farmers attacked again. Police also said that during the scuffle, some vehicles were damaged too.

Violence broke out after the police tried to negotiate with the farmers, whose aggressive stance further increased the tension. No farner has been arrested so far and the investigation is underway. However, several policemen have been admitted to a local hospital for treatment. The police had allegedly resorted to lathi charge to disperse the farmers when the situation worsened instead.
