Former Supreme Court Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul Appointed to Deliver Verdicts in Bahrain
Former Indian Supreme Court Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul has been appointed as a judge of the Bahrain International Commercial Court (BICC). The nine distinguished judges were announced by Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, who also appointed John Paulsson as President and Sir Christopher Greenwood as Vice President.
International Judicial Representation
Justice Kaul, a retired Chief Justice of the Punjab & Haryana and Madras High Courts, sits alongside an impressive panel of judges, which includes Mary Lim Thiam Suan of Malaysia, Sir Vivian Ramsey of UK, Ha Yung-Tek Shin of South Korea, Henk Sneeijers of Netherlands, Judith Prakash of Singapore, and Fatima Faisal Hubail of Bahrain. The nine-member bench consisted of six men and three women, all of whom are senior judges or mediators from Europe and Asia.
Bahrain International Commercial Court (BICC)
The BICC was established in March 2024 by a treaty between Bahrain and Singapore, on the model of the Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC). It allows parties to appeal to an international committee of the SICC or, in some instances, to the BICC Appellate Tribunal. The court deals with commercial cases primarily in English, reflecting the language in which most commercial contracts in Bahrain are drawn up.
Background of Justice Kaul
Justice Kaul's illustrious career involves his being a judge of the Delhi High Court, Chief Justice of the Punjab & Haryana and Madras High Courts, and now Supreme Court Justice in India. His appointment to the BICC marks him out as one of the leading lights in the domain of judiciary.
