Pune: Guillain-Barré Syndrome Outbreak Causes Alarm, Over 70 Hospitalized

Pune: A rare neurological condition, Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), has sparked panic in Pune. More than 70 individuals have been hospitalized, with 15 patients requiring ventilator support. This disorder, often linked to bacterial and viral infections, weakens the immune system and can lead to paralysis. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued an advisory and announced free treatment for affected patients.

What is Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)?

Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a serious disorder where the immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness and, in severe cases, paralysis.

Key Symptoms

Tingling or numbness in the hands and feet.
Muscle weakness starting in the legs and moving upward.
Difficulty walking, breathing, or speaking.
Severe cases may require ventilator support.

Causes

Often linked to Campylobacter jejuni bacteria, spread through contaminated food or water.
Viral infections like flu, Epstein-Barr virus, or Zika virus can also trigger the condition.
Rare cases arise after vaccination or surgery.

Current Situation in Pune

Over 70 patients have been admitted to hospitals, with 15 critically ill and placed on ventilators. Cases are being reported from Pune and surrounding regions.

Government Response

Free treatment for GBS patients at Kamla Nehru Hospital.
₹2 lakh insurance for treatment in private hospitals.
PMC has issued a public advisory urging citizens to take precautions.

Treatment Options

There is no direct cure for GBS, but treatments can manage symptoms:

Plasma Exchange (Plasmapheresis): Removes harmful antibodies.
Immunoglobulin Therapy (IVIG): Boosts the immune system.
Physiotherapy: Aids in recovery and regaining strength.

Preventive Measures

Drink clean, filtered water.
Eat well-cooked food.
Maintain hygiene and wash hands regularly.
Consult a doctor immediately if symptoms occur.
