Gujarat Man Kills Self Over Bureaucratic Tussles for Daughter's Caste Certificate

A tragic incident in Mahisagar district, Gujarat, has highlighted the plight of citizens who are forced to face bureaucratic inefficiencies. Udabhai Damor, a resident of Ranakpur village in Kadana Taluka, took his own life after he was repeatedly hindered from obtaining an English caste certificate for his daughter.
His daughter, Druvisha Damor, had just been selected for a post office job in Tharad, Vav region, under the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. However, since the job fell under the Central Government, she was asked to submit her caste certificate in English within 10 days.
Endless Bureaucratic Struggles
To meet this requirement, he went to the Mamlatdar (revenue) office of Kadana for repeated translations and certification. In this case also, officials-Deputy Mamlatdar Suresh Sangda and Chief Mamlatdar Harshadbhai Parmar-continue to ask for proof even after submitting the required papers.
Despite repeated visits and hours of waiting, the red tape of the bureaucracy frustrated him and left him hopeless. More worried about his daughter losing her job, he began to get distraught.
Hanging Himself
Udabhai could not receive the certificate. He hanged himself from a tree near his house. He wrote a suicide note before committing suicide, listing the officials involved in his saga.
His tragic death has sparked outrage, raising serious concerns over the inefficiency of government offices and the mental stress imposed on individuals navigating bureaucratic processes.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are now investigating the circumstances leading to Udabhai’s suicide. His family and villagers demand strict action against the responsible officials, holding them accountable for their negligence.
This heartbreaking case highlights the urgent need for streamlined administrative processes to prevent such tragedies in the future.
