Gyanesh Kumar was born on January 27, 1964, in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. He completed his B.Tech in Civil Engineering from IIT Kanpur and went on to study Business Finance from ICFAI Hyderabad. Later, he pursued Environmental Economics at Harvard University.
Having a keen interest in academics, Gyanesh Kumar excelled in his school and college years. He topped his high school and intermediate exams at Colvin Talukdar College in Lucknow. After working briefly at HUDCO, he cleared the IAS exam in 1988.
