Gyanvapi Masjid complex issue has snowballed into a major national controversy.

The ancient mosque in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi witnessed court-mandated videography survey; it ended today, just a day before the next hearing of the case in court.

The lawyer representing the Hindu women claims that a shiva linga has been found in the pond inside the mosque complex.

Following this claim, the Varanasi court has now ordered the immediate sealing off of the pond after a plea from the petitioners. It directed the Varanasi District Magistrate to ensure that nobody is allowed to enter the area.

As the water was drained from the pond this morning, a “Shivling” was found, claimed Subhash Nandan Chaturvedi, the lawyer.

The pond, which is used for the Islamic “Wuzu” or ablutions has now been sealed after the court order.

It is to be noted that the Gyanvapi mosque is located close to the iconic Kashi Vishwanath temple.

The filming ordered by the court was challenged before Allahabad High Court. The High Court order was challenged in the Supreme Court later.

A lawyer representing the Gyanvapi Mosque trust said it is at odds with the Places of Worship Act, 1991.

However, the Supreme Court refused to stop the filming. The apext court also agreed to consider listing the plea against the survey of the mosque complex.
