HMPV Side Effects: Can It Cause Long-Term Health Issues Like COVID-19?

HMPV Side Effects: Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is becoming a cause of concern in India, with 11 confirmed cases so far, including 10 children and one elderly woman. Though similar to COVID-19 in symptoms, it generally causes milder effects. States are on alert, and isolation wards are being set up in hospitals to manage the rising cases.

HMPV vs. COVID-19: Long-Term Health Effects

Dr. Ajit Jain, of GTB Hospital's Medicine Department, says HMPV does not cause the long-term complications seen with COVID-19, which caused lung and heart issues. The major differences are:

COVID-19 Impact: Directly attacked the lungs and heart, leaving many with long-term respiratory and cardiovascular issues.
HMPV Impact: It usually heals completely, though a few people (less than 2%) suffer from respiratory issues, particularly those with predisposed conditions like asthma or pneumonia.

HMPV Symptoms

HMPV Symptoms

Fever
Cough
Runny nose
Difficulty in breathing

It may cause pneumonia in extreme cases, especially among children with a weak immune system.

How to Avoid HMPV Infection

To prevent HMPV, take these precautions:
Wash hands frequently, especially before consuming food.
Do not come near an infected person.
Get tested if you are experiencing symptoms like fever, cough, or breathlessness.
Keep a close eye on children to ensure their immunity is high.

Though HMPV is somewhat similar to COVID-19, it does not often lead to chronic health problems. However, people with weak immune systems, particularly children and people with pre-existing respiratory diseases, need to be cautious.
