A court in Kollam of Kerala on Wednesday gave double life term to the man, found guilty of killing his wife using a cobra snake
Calling it one of the rarest of the rare cases, it spared the death sentence considering the age of the husband, P Sooraj.
The 32-year-old man will have to undergo all sentences separately, the court said.
His life sentence will start only after 17 years. He will have to spend the rest of his life in jail.
The court had convicted Sooraj of murdering his wife after letting loose a cobra on his wife while she was sleeping. Not only this, he even forced the snake to bite her. Although, the prosecution had sought capital punishment for him.
Uthra was his 25-year-old wife who suffered a bite at her home. The woman was undergoing treatment for a snake bite she had suffered.
Uthra’s parents said they were not satisfied as they expected a death sentence. Now they will move to the Kerala high court for the death sentence.
This was Sooraj’s second attempt at killing her through a snake. The case came to light in May 2019 when Uthra’s parents filed a police complaint two days after her death alleging Sooraj harassing their daughter for dowry.
