Tragedy Strikes IIT Kanpur: PhD Scholar's Heartbreaking Suicide Leaves Campus in Shock, Note Reveals Sole Responsibility!

Kanpur — In a tragic incident, 26-year-old Pragati Gupta, a final-year PhD research scholar at IIT Kanpur, died by suicide in her hostel room on Thursday. The local police from Kalyanpur station, along with a forensic team, arrived at the scene soon after being informed. The authorities also immediately notified her family.

Suicide Note Reveals Personal Accountability

A suicide note was recovered from Pragati’s room, in which she took full responsibility for her death. In the note, she wrote, “I am responsible for my own death. Friends, you’ve supported me a lot... thanks.” The brief message indicated that she had made a deliberate decision, although the underlying reasons remain unclear.

Details of the Incident

Pragati hailed from Sanigwan in Kanpur, and her father, Govind Gupta, is a resident of the area. She had been pursuing her PhD at IIT Kanpur and was in her final year. Concerns arose when Pragati did not respond to phone calls and did not emerge from her room in the morning. Her fellow students reported the matter to the IIT management, and upon breaking down the door, they found Pragati’s body hanging from the ceiling fan.

Police Investigation Underway

The police are currently investigating the case, questioning her family and friends to gather more information. Although the suicide note points to suicide, authorities are working to understand the factors that led to this heartbreaking event.
