IIT Kanpur Faces Another Harassment Case After ACP Mohsin Khan Incident

A female researcher at IIT Kanpur has filed a sexual harassment case against her male colleague, marking the second such incident at the institute in recent months. The Kalayanpur police have started an investigation, and the victim is set to record her statement before a magistrate.
Researcher Accuses Colleague of Sexual Harassment
The victim, a researcher from a northeastern state, has been working on a cybersecurity project at IIT Kanpur since 2024. She alleges that her colleague, Shubham Malviya from Indore, sexually harassed her under the pretext of marriage.
According to the complaint
The accused promised marriage but later refused.
He allegedly threatened and assaulted her when she asked him to commit.
The victim, unable to tolerate the abuse, reported the incident to IIT Kanpur authorities.

IIT Kanpur Forms Investigation Committee
After receiving the complaint, IIT Kanpur formed an internal committee to investigate the case. Meanwhile, the victim also filed a police complaint at Kalayanpur police station.
FIR has been registered based on the victim’s statement.
The victim underwent a medical examination on Wednesday.
Her statement before a magistrate is scheduled for Thursday.

According to Kalayanpur police in-charge Sudhir Kumar, the accused, Shubham Malviya, lives outside the IIT Kanpur campus on rent.
His phone is switched off.
His number has been placed under surveillance.
Police are actively searching for him.
Previous Harassment Case at IIT Kanpur
This incident follows a previous case in December 2024, where an IIT Kanpur researcher accused ACP Mohsin Khan of sexual harassment under the false promise of marriage.
Khan allegedly hid his marital status while deceiving the victim.
A case was filed against him at Kalayanpur police station.
Following the case, Khan was transferred to Lucknow headquarters.
The back-to-back harassment cases at IIT Kanpur have raised concerns about campus safety. Authorities are under pressure to ensure stricter policies against harassment and provide a secure environment for students and researchers. The investigation in both cases is ongoing, with police actively pursuing the accused individuals.
