IMD Weather Alert: Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Expected This Week

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts for multiple Indian states due to expected heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds from 5th to 8th May. Regions like Gujarat, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Uttarakhand are on alert for extreme weather. Residents are urged to remain cautious and updated.
 
IMD Weather Alert: Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Expected This Week

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released a new weather warning for various states across the nation since heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely to hit major regions of India over the course of this week.

The latest spell of rains has provided a much-needed relief from the heat of the past summer, particularly at night. But a combination of Western Disturbances, upper air cyclonic circulations, and troughs continues to cause unstable weather conditions.

Heavy Rain Warning in These States

As per the IMD, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over the following places:

  • Odisha (5th May)
  • Nicobar Islands (up to 8th May)
  • West Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Jammu-Kashmir, and Ladakh (6th to 8th May)
  • Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam (upto 6th May)
  • Kerala & Mahe (7th–8th May)
  • Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh (5th–8th May)
  • Gujarat (5th–8th May)

Imminent Rain Over Central and Eastern India

Recurring periods of moderate rain are likely in:

  • Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, and Sikkim (upto 6th May)
  • Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh (5th–8th May)

A few western coastal states such as Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada will also experience light showers with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of up to 50 kmph.

Hailstorms and Thundersquall Warnings Issued

The IMD has also issued a thundersquall and hailstorm warning for the following regions:

  • Madhya Maharashtra (6th–7th May)
  • Marathwada (7th May)
  • Gujarat Region (5th–8th May)
  • Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam (5th May)
  • Uttarakhand (6th–7th May)
  • Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh (5th May)
  • West Rajasthan (5th–7th May)

People are recommended to remain indoors during the peak storm period, refrain from traveling if possible, and adhere to local administration guidelines.
