95 Indian and 90 Bangladeshi Fishermen Repatriated
Bangladesh released 95 Indian fishermen, while India handed over 90 Bangladeshi fishermen, including 12 rescued from the sunken fishing boat "Kaushik."
The operation was conducted by Indian Coast Guard ships Varad and Amrit Kaur, ensuring the safe return of fishermen and their boats.
Arrests Due to Border Crossings
In recent months, several Indian fishermen were detained by Bangladeshi authorities after unknowingly crossing the international maritime boundary. Similarly, Bangladeshi fishermen faced similar situations in Indian waters.
Local Impact
Most of the returning Indian fishermen hail from Kakdwip and Namkhana in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Upon their arrival at Gangasagar on Monday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is expected to welcome them.
Significance of the Exchange
This coordinated effort highlights the importance of mutual cooperation between India and Bangladesh in resolving humanitarian issues and maintaining peace along their maritime borders.
