India on Friday reported 91,702 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours. This takes the country’s caseload to over 2.9 crores.
The coronavirus death toll has now surged to more than 3.7 lakh after 3,403 Covid-related deaths were recorded on Thursday.
Tamil Nadu is the highest contributor with 16,813 cases. However, active cases have dropped further to 11.21 lakh.
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Friday said there has been an 8 per cent decline in daily cases since the highest peak reported on May 7.
The weekly Covid-19 positivity rate has declined by 74 per cent since the highest such rate was reported at 21.6 per cent between April 30-May 6.
Moreover, the ICMR will start national-level serosurveys to assess the spread of Covid-19. All states as well as UTs should also be encouraged to conduct them so that information from all geographies can be collected said the Union health ministry.
Cases are declining but people need to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour. India will also receive a share of the 80 million (8 crores) unused COVID-19 vaccines through COVAX. The initiative aims at sharing vaccines globally.
