India Successfully Tests Agni-4 Nuclear Missile, a Concern for China and Pakistan

New Delhi – India has successfully conducted a test of the Agni-4 missile, a nuclear-capable intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM), from the APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha on September 6, 2024. This successful test comes after a two-year hiatus, with the previous test conducted on June 6, 2022.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Agni-4 missile is designed to carry a one-ton nuclear warhead and has a range of approximately 4,000 kilometers. The missile’s successful launch demonstrates India's continued commitment to maintaining its credible minimum deterrence capability. The missile met all operational parameters during the test.

The Strategic Forces Command described the test as a routine training launch aimed at verifying the missile’s performance and operational readiness. The Agni-4 missile's capabilities are significant, as it poses a strategic challenge to neighboring countries like China and Pakistan, which view the missile as a critical element in regional security dynamics.

India's defense strategy emphasizes maintaining a robust and reliable deterrent, and the successful test of the Agni-4 underscores the country’s ability to project power and secure its strategic interests.
