India is just about to cross a major milestone in administering the Covid-19 vaccination. A billion vaccine doses will be administered by the end of October 2021.

The Centre will then take a call on resuming the exports of locally-made Covid vaccines, Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya said Wednesday.

Also, around 280 million doses are available for India’s own vaccination drive. India will cross this billion-dose mark around mid-October. Until last night, India had administered 967 million doses, with 276 million people have received both doses and another 414 million have received one dose.

So far, only China has administered more vaccine doses than India. Besides, the subject expert committee of the drug regulator has also recommended the emergency use of the COVID-19 vaccine for those in the 2 to 18 years age group.

However, India is yet to start vaccinations of those under the age of 18.

Many countries, including Australia, recognise Covishield, the Indian variant of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 shot.

Moreover, India is yet to take a call on administering booster doses to senior citizens. Now the WHO says that a new task force may be the last chance to find the origins of Covid-19.

The global health agency has nominated 26 experts to join the body, the Scientific Advisory Group on the Origins of Novel Pathogens (Sago).
