India witnesses biggest jump in Covid tally for first time in 120 days

In a recent case surge, India’s daily Covid tally crossed the 17,000-mark for the first time in over four months.

It reported 17,336 new infections in the last 24 hours as per the daily health bulletin. Besides, thirteen fresh Covid-linked fatalities were also reported that takes the total number of lives lost since the beginning of the pandemic to 5,24,954.

The number of active Covid-19 cases in India went up by over 4,200 to reach 0.19 per cent of the total cases. On the other hand, 13,029 people recovered from the deadly infection in the last 24 hours, taking the recovery rate to 98.60 per cent.

When it comes to vaccination, over 13 lakh doses were administered on Thursday, of which 3.77 lakh were booster doses.

Figures include both – the 1st and 2nd doses – over 3.23 lakh children between the ages of 12 to 14 years were also vaccinated in the last 24 hours.

Also, COVID-19 vaccines prevented over 42 lakh potential deaths in India in 2021, as per a study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal. It based its findings on estimates of “excess” mortalities in India during the pandemic.

Globally, the mathematical modelling study found that COVID-19 vaccines reduced the potential death count during the pandemic by nearly 20 million or more than half in the year following their implementation.
