As the Director General of Police (DGP) in Uttar Pradesh, Kumar’s story is not just one of professional success but also of profound dedication and discipline.

 

Kumar joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1990 and initially served in the Tamil Nadu cadre. Due to personal reasons, he later transferred to the Uttar Pradesh cadre in 1994, where he has made a significant impact.

Prashant Kumar’s educational background is as remarkable as his career. He holds multiple advanced degrees, including a Master’s in Applied Zoology, an MBA in Disaster Management, and an MPhil in Defense and Strategic Studies. His diverse academic qualifications reflect his deep commitment to learning and his understanding of complex subjects beyond conventional policing.

Notable Achievements

Kumar’s professional journey is highlighted by his reputation as an ‘encounter specialist.’ He has been involved in numerous high-profile cases and has conducted approximately 300 encounters, a testament to his experience and effectiveness in handling crime. His tenure as the Additional Director General (ADG) in the Meerut zone was particularly notable. During this time, he played a crucial role in resolving a high-stakes kidnapping case in 2017. The case involved the abduction of Dr. Srikant Gaur, a prominent physician, whose kidnappers had demanded a ransom of ₹5 crore. Kumar, in coordination with Delhi Police and SSP Meerut Manzil Saini, led a successful operation to rescue Dr. Gaur and apprehend the culprits.

Recognition and Awards

Kumar’s contributions to policing have been recognized with multiple awards. He has received the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry four times, in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. These honors underscore his bravery and dedication to maintaining law and order.
