Jairam Ramesh Questions Government's Response to Repeated Parliamentary Adjournments Over Adani Issue

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has questioned the government's response to repeated adjournments in Parliament, specifically in the context of ongoing protests over the Adani issue. On November 29, 2024, Ramesh took to social media to voice his concern about the government's silence and apparent facilitation of disruptions in the House.

The big mystery is why the government is not resisting the adjournments," Ramesh said, adding that the government has much to feel "defensive and apologetic" about. Ramesh's comments come at a time when opposition parties, particularly those under the INDIA alliance, are continuing their protests over a range of issues including Adani Group's controversial dealings, violence in Manipur, and law and order concerns in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh.

The ongoing deadlock in Parliament has led to several washout days, with both Houses adjourned on multiple occasions. On November 29, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned after opposition MPs raised slogans protesting the rejection of adjournment motions concerning the Adani issue. The opposition has been seeking a discussion on the allegations against the Adani Group, which has been embroiled in controversy over allegations of financial mismanagement and corruption.

Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar rejected 17 adjournment notices for discussions on the Adani issue and other matters, which triggered protests from opposition MPs. Ramesh highlighted that the government is "facilitating the aggression" of the opposition on these sensitive issues instead of trying to bring the situation under control.

"The government has much to feel defensive and apologetic about," Ramesh claimed, pointing out that the government has not discussed the urgent matters put up by the opposition. This statement sums up the tension in Parliament where every move to raise sensitive topics, such as the Adani controversy, Manipur violence, and the situation in Sambhal, were suppressed.

Lok Sabha proceedings also were adjourned on the same day due to noisy protests by opposition MPs, who focused their protests on the Adani controversy and accusations of a lack of accountability from the ruling party.

The political weather remains hot, with Congress along with other opposition parties casting aspersions on the government for dodging serious debates. The stand off is expected to continue where the government is being panned more for its action on these high-profile cases.
