Jammu & Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah: "Congress is Not in Our Coalition"
CM Omar Abdullah stated that the Congress supports the J&K government externally and is not part of the coalition. He emphasized pursuing statehood restoration, improving electricity supply, and addressing allegations of misconduct by security forces, including urging strict action if violations are confirmed.
Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah sounded a great point of clarity by stating that Congress is not a constituent part of his National Conference-led government Friday. Clarifying that the party's support to the government was external, Abdullah also touched upon the poll dynamics in Maharashtra, alleged mistreatment of civilians in Kishtwar, and issues connected to special status of the state.
During a press briefing after a cabinet meeting, Abdullah emphasized the status of the special resolution for Jammu & Kashmir. He said that the resolution passed with majority in the assembly is still valid and not rejected so far. "If the resolution was insignificant, why do Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah repeatedly mention it?" asked Abdullah.
Political Prisoners and Statehood
Abdullah said that the cases of political prisoners would be taken for review and released after Jammu & Kashmir acquires statehood again. He disclosed that some steps have already been initiated to ease out the verification process for prisoner cases and hoped for more improvement in the near future.
Institution of Cabinet Sub-Committee
The cabinet meeting also led to the formation of a three-member sub-committee tasked with reviewing the reservation policy in light of Supreme Court directions. Abdullah noted that the committee would submit its recommendations to the cabinet for further action.
On Allegations of Civilian Mistreatment
Regarding alleged mistreatment of civilians in Kishtwar by security forces, Abdullah called for a through investigation. "If misconduct by soldiers is found, the guilty should face court-martial and strict punishment," he asserted.
Power Supply During Winter
Abdullah directed the power department to minimize electricity cuts in areas with lower theft rates. He expressed optimism over improved power supply in Kashmir during the winter months.
Broader Implications
Statements from Omar Abdullah showcase the intricacies of governance within Jammu & Kashmir and the difficulties created by the political and administrative dynamics of the region.
