Kanakadasa Jayanthi 2024: A Tribute to the Social Reformist and Karnataka's Devotional Poet
Kanakadasa Jayanthi is on 18th November, and it is an important function in Karnataka on the birthday of Shri Kanakadasa. The poet, philosopher, and social reformer Kanakadasa is remembered for his rich contributions to Carnatic music and exhortation for social equality through devotional Kannada compositions. The occasion assumes importance this time since it coincides with 18th November, a public holiday declared by the Karnataka government to accord him a befitting tribute.
Born in the year 1509, Kanakadasa emerged as a significant personality within the Bhakti movement. To his credit are Keertanas (devotional songs) and Ugabhogas (spontaneous lyrical compositions). His works written in Kannada helped spiritual and devotional services reach the common man beyond the strictly defined caste system created in society. He suggested humility, devotion, and social justice through his musical and poetic expressions. His innocuous, yet pure renditions are an indispensable part of Carnatic music and continue to be performed in numerous religious and cultural events in Karnataka.
One of the most poignant stories associated with Kanakadasa is his adoration for Lord Krishna. It is said that he was once barred from entering the Udupi Krishna Temple as he was of low caste. Undeterred, Kanakadasa penned a devotional song outside the temple; moved by it, Lord Krishna himself turned the idol so that Kanakadasa could see the deity. This act of divine grace symbolizes equality and the belief that devotion transcends caste and social status, the very core tenets of the philosophical school Dvaita Vedanta that Kanakadasa followed.
Kanakadasa was a meek preacher under the influence of Madhvacharya's Dvaita Vedanta philosophy. His teachings are on establishing duality between the individual self, the Atman, and the supreme soul, Brahman. He believed anybody, in any socio-economic group, could attain salvation by the impact of bhakti towards God. Immeasurable impact on the cultural and spiritual life of Karnataka through his contributions in music and philosophy.
Kannadigas across Karnataka remember his life and work on Kanakadasa Jayanthi 2024 and reflect on what the icon brought to Kannada literature, Carnatic music, and social reform.
