Kanhaiya Kumar, the former student leader on Tuesday joined Indian National Congress. The induction took place at the All India Congress Committee headquarters in New Delhi. The induction ceremony took place in the presence of party leader Rahul Gandhi and other party stalwarts.
At the event, the leader from Gujarat, Jignesh Mevani, too, extended his support. Although he could not join the party formally owing to reasons unknown.
Kanhaiya Kumar reiterated how a particular ideology was trying to ruin India’s values, culture, history, and future.
Earlier, Kanhaiya was with the Communist Party of India (CPI). He had joined that party ahead of the 2019 general election.
Kanhaiya had also contested from his hometown Begusarai in Bihar against the BJP’s Giriraj Singh of the BJP but failed to win.
There were posters welcoming Kanhaiya to the party.
He is a former president of the JNU Students’ Union.
Kumar also spoke about the freedom fighters and the rich history of India’s Independence.
Talking of M K Gandhi’s courage and the role of many stalwarts who fought for the country, Kanhaiya brought his point home of saving the country from evil hands.
Jignesh Mevani, on the other hand, is a legislator who represents Gujarat’s Vadgam constituency.
A lawyer and former journalist, Mewani’s support for the Congress come at a time when the party is reaching out to the community.
The coming of Kanhaiya Kumar and Jignesh Mevani is like windfall luck for the Congress at a time when some big leaders have left the Congress in recent months.
