Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh: A Diwali night tragedy struck in Kanpur’s Kakadeo locality, where a married couple and their housemaid lost their lives in a fire that consumed their apartment, according to authorities on Saturday. The incident, which occurred in the Pandu Nagar neighborhood, is believed to have started from a diya lit in celebration of Diwali. The small flame reportedly ignited a larger blaze, engulfing the entire residence before the occupants could escape.

The fire took place in Sanjay Shyamdasani’s family home, where Sanjay, his wife Kanika, and their housemaid, Chhavi Chauhan, had celebrated Diwali. After evening prayers, the family lit diyas in the home temple and went to bed, unaware that one of the diyas would soon ignite a tragedy. Early morning reports suggest the diya set fire to the wooden elements in the temple area. By the time the flames spread throughout the house, heavy smoke had already begun to fill the rooms, trapping the victims inside and ultimately suffocating Sanjay and Kanika as they slept.
Immediate Response and Tragic Outcome
Neighbors quickly called emergency services upon noticing the smoke and flames. Firefighters arrived on the scene and worked tirelessly to control the blaze. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, Sanjay and Kanika succumbed to smoke inhalation. Chhavi, the housemaid, was transported to a hospital for treatment but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.
Ongoing Investigation
Police have taken charge of the scene and are conducting a thorough investigation to confirm the exact cause of the fire. While initial reports suggest the diya as the cause, authorities are examining all potential factors. The bodies have been sent for postmortem to help establish a more conclusive understanding of the tragedy.
