Kanpur is ready to enter a new era in its city transport history with the completion of the city's first underground metro station. This milestone is a significant achievement in the Kanpur Metro Rail Project. The second phase, which consists of an underground corridor, will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 24.
The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has speeded up the last-minute preparations for the section that links Chunniganj to Naubasta, taking cutting-edge metro travel right into the city's heart.

Metro Services to Start from Moti Jheel to Kanpur Central
Metro operations will officially commence from April 25 on the Moti Jheel to Naveen Central route, a day after the inauguration. Five new underground stations—Moti Jheel, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Nayaganj, and Kanpur Central—are part of the new stretch. For everything to run according to plan, the Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, recently inspected the site and even took a trial ride from Nayaganj to Rawatpur, giving officials important instructions.
Quicker Travel from IIT Kanpur to Kanpur Central in Only 28 Minutes
After completing Phase 2, the metro now reaches 16 kilometers, significantly shortening the travel time within the city. Travelers will find it convenient to travel from IIT Kanpur to Kanpur Central Railway Station in just 28 minutes, making it a quicker and affordable option for regular commuters.
Five New Underground Stations to be Rolled Out
The second phase consists of five new underground metro stations, which are:
- Chunniganj
- Naveen Market
- Bada Chauraha
- Nayaganj
- Kanpur Central
These additions will substantially improve connectivity throughout central Kanpur and reduce traffic congestion on the surface roads.
