The shootout occurred on the Rasoolabad road in the Rura police jurisdiction as the fugitive attempted to flee the headquarters of a police checkpoint.

The incident started when officers signaled a suspicious motorcyclist to stop during the course of routine checks. Instead of stopping, the man attempted to flee, prompting a chase. In the course of the pursuit, the fugitive opened fire on the police team, which escalated the situation. In retaliation, the officers returned fire and managed to injure Lalya in the leg.

Wanted Criminal Injured in Shootout with Kanpur Police

Known to be a habitual offender, Lalya was taken into custody and whisked away to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. He was confirmed to be a culprit in a recent liquor shop robbery and had half a dozen or more cases against him. The police had announced a bounty of ₹5,000 for his arrest, and his notorious image in the district was well known.

Kanpur police have hailed the operation successful, saying that the raid has helped put a curb on criminal activity in the region. "This arrest sends a clear message that lawlessness will not be tolerated," an official said.
