Stop Wasting Food! Karnataka Government's New Law Coming to Save the Plate!
Are you guilty of wasting food? Well, get ready for a wake-up call! Karnataka is cooking up a new law aimed at curbing food waste, and it’s about to change the way we eat out.
On October 17, during a World Food Day celebration at Bengaluru Agricultural University, Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Minister K.H. Muniyappa revealed that the state government is considering legislation to prevent food waste in hotels and banquet halls. With many people still grappling with hunger, this initiative comes at a crucial time.
Muniyappa stated, “The government will draft regulations to ensure food waste is minimized in hotels and wedding venues.” He highlighted that a staggering ₹90,000 crores worth of food goes to waste annually in India. That’s a lot of food ending up in the trash instead of bellies!
The minister emphasized the need to teach children about the importance of not wasting food and using it wisely. He also pointed out that around 70% of India’s population relies on agriculture, and there’s a pressing need to increase the consumption of ragi, which is beneficial for health.
India currently boasts a robust food grain stock that could sustain the country for three years, making it strong enough to export to other nations. With the 'Anna Bhagya' scheme launched under the leadership of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, the government aims to ensure that no citizen goes hungry.
