Intense Cold Wave and Freezing Temperatures in Kashmir

Kashmir is in the midst of an extreme cold wave, with temperatures dropping well below freezing. According to meteorological reports, Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of -7°C on Wednesday night, offering a slight relief from the previous night’s low of -7.3°C. Other areas like Gulmarg recorded -6°C, Pahalgam dropped to -8.6°C, and the coldest area, Kokernag, saw temperatures hit -9°C. Many regions in Kashmir are facing frozen water bodies and disrupted supply lines, adding to the hardships of residents.

Weather Forecast for New Year in Kashmir

The weather department predicts that a western disturbance will bring light snowfall to higher altitudes in Kashmir from Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon. However, the weather is expected to remain mostly dry from December 29 to 31. For those planning to visit Kashmir in early January, light snowfall is expected in scattered locations from January 1 to 4.

Chilla-e-Kalan: Kashmir’s Harshest Winter Period

Kashmir is currently going through Chilla-e-Kalan, the harshest 40-day period of winter, which began on December 21. This phase is known for extreme cold and frequent snowfall. Chilla-e-Kalan will continue until January 30, after which the less severe Chilla-e-Khurd and Chilla-e-Bachha will follow, gradually easing the cold weather.
