In Kolkata, intense protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital turned violent as an angry mob stormed the hospital premises, causing significant damage to property. The protestors, demanding justice for the victim, clashed with police, leading to a tense and chaotic situation.

Protests Turn Violent

The protests, initially peaceful, escalated when a large crowd gathered at the hospital to express their outrage over the horrific crime. As tensions mounted, the situation spiraled out of control, resulting in widespread vandalism. The protesters tore down police barricades, damaged vehicles, and set fire to a motorcycle parked outside the hospital. In response, the police resorted to tear gas and a baton charge to disperse the mob and regain control.

Police Action

The Kolkata Police, faced with the growing unrest, took swift action to contain the violence. Tear gas was deployed, and the police had to use force to disperse the rioters. Riot control police were also brought in to manage the situation. The authorities have been on high alert, with additional forces deployed to ensure that the violence does not spread further.

Statement from Kolkata Police Commissioner

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal urged the public not to spread rumors, emphasizing that the police are thoroughly investigating every aspect of the case. He expressed concern over the impact of misinformation and stated, "Please do not spread rumors. We are investigating everything. We are constantly questioning every individual who was present. By spreading rumors and creating distrust among citizens, the city suffers, not Vineet Goyal. You should ask the CBI about the kind of work done in these four days and how the city has responded, which has been demoralizing for them."

Witness Account from a Trainee Doctor

Hasan Mushtaq, a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College, described the terrifying experience, stating, "We were supposed to start our protest march at 11 PM. However, there was a large group of people outside the campus protesting. They were chanting slogans like 'We want justice,' but they weren't moving forward. The crowd became agitated and tried to enter the campus. Suddenly, they stormed in and started vandalizing everything. We had already asked our female team members to leave, and as soon as they did, the crowd broke through the barricades and entered. We had to run for our lives, even though we were peacefully protesting."

Political Reactions

Abhishek Banerjee, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) National General Secretary and Member of Parliament, condemned the violence at RG Kar Medical College. He stated, "The hooliganism and barbarity at RG Kar have crossed all acceptable limits. As a public representative, I have just spoken to the Kolkata Police Commissioner, urging him to ensure that every individual responsible for today’s violence is identified, held accountable, and brought to justice within the next 24 hours, regardless of their political affiliation. The demands of the protesting doctors are reasonable and justified. This is the minimum they should expect from the government. Their safety and security must be prioritized."

The situation remains tense, with authorities closely monitoring developments and taking necessary steps to restore order and ensure justice for the victim.
