Kolkata Doctor Murder Case: CBI Rules Out Gang Rape, Identifies Lone Accused
Roy, who is currently in police custody, has been identified as the only perpetrator in the case, putting an end to speculation about multiple assailants.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has dismissed the possibility of gang rape in the murder of a doctor from Kolkata, which occurred last month. According to reports, the investigation points to Sanjay Roy as the sole accused in the tragic rape and murder at RG Kar Hospital. Roy, who is currently in police custody, has been identified as the only perpetrator in the case, putting an end to speculation about multiple assailants.
CBI Investigation Nears Conclusion
The CBI took over the case after an order from the Kolkata High Court and is now nearing the end of its investigation. The agency has been working swiftly, gathering evidence and examining DNA samples at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. The CBI has recorded over 100 witness statements and conducted 10 polygraph tests, two of which involved Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former chief of RG Kar Hospital. While Dr. Ghosh has not been implicated in the crime, the investigation is now awaiting final expert opinions before charges are filed.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Criticizes Delays
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been vocal in her criticism of the investigation's pace. Initially, Banerjee requested the state police handle the case, but the High Court transferred the investigation to the CBI. Frustrated with the delay, Banerjee questioned why, after more than 16 days, justice had not yet been served. Her comments reflect the growing political pressure surrounding the case, with opposition parties and civil society also raising concerns about the delay.
Arrest of Dr. Sandip Ghosh for Financial Misconduct
In a related development, the CBI arrested Dr. Sandip Ghosh on charges of financial misconduct during his tenure as the chief of RG Kar Hospital. While Ghosh has not been implicated in the murder case, he faces allegations of selling unclaimed bodies, trafficking biomedical waste, and accepting bribes for hospital tenders. The CBI launched this investigation after receiving a petition from Akhtar Ali, a former hospital employee and Deputy Superintendent.
Following his arrest, Dr. Ghosh was suspended by both the Bengal government and the Indian Medical Association. His Kolkata residence was raided as part of the ongoing probe into the alleged financial irregularities.
Public Outrage and Allegations of Police Cover-Up
The murder has sparked outrage across the country, with protests led by medical professionals, civil society groups, and opposition parties. The victim’s family has accused local police of attempting to cover up the crime and offering bribes to suppress details. They have also expressed frustration over the pressure to cremate their daughter's body prematurely, claiming they were surrounded by police and intimidated. The police have denied these allegations, while the government has suggested that opposition parties are using the case to stir unrest.
A Nation Awaits Justice
As the investigation reaches its final stages, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the victim and her family. With public protests intensifying and political pressure mounting, all eyes are on the CBI as it prepares to file charges and bring closure to this harrowing case.
