CBI Arrests Former RG Kar Medical College Principal Sandeep Ghosh in Corruption Case

In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata, in connection with a corruption case. The arrest follows extensive investigations, including raids at 15 locations associated with Ghosh and his close associates. The CBI had been questioning Ghosh for over 15 days before making the arrest.

Background of the Case:

The corruption case involves multiple allegations, including mismanagement of funds, nepotism in vendor selection, and other financial irregularities. The investigation intensified after former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar, Akhtar Ali, revealed details of Ghosh's involvement in these corrupt practices in court. Akhtar accused Ghosh of being involved in illegal activities such as embezzlement of government funds and unlawful appointment of contractors.

Murder and Rape Case:

Apart from the corruption charges, Ghosh’s name has also surfaced in connection with the rape and murder of a female doctor at the RG Kar Medical College. The tragic incident occurred on August 9 in the college's seminar hall, where the victim was brutally assaulted and killed. The accused, a civic volunteer named Sanjay Roy, was arrested the next day. Following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, the CBI took over the investigation of this case as well.

Public Outrage and Demands for Resignation:

The brutal murder and subsequent events have sparked widespread public anger in West Bengal. The police, in particular, have faced severe criticism for their handling of the situation. On Monday, junior doctors from various medical colleges in Kolkata organized a rally demanding the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. They accused the police of inaction during the vandalism that occurred at the medical college on August 14.

The rally, which aimed to reach the police headquarters at Lalbazar, was stopped by barricades on BB Ganguly Street. The doctors, who asserted that their protest was peaceful, were blocked from meeting the police commissioner. The protestors later burned an effigy of the commissioner as a sign of their frustration with the police's response to the incidents.

CBI’s Continued Probe:

Following the raids and the arrest, the CBI has stated that they have gathered substantial evidence in the case. In parallel, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is also investigating Ghosh in connection with a money laundering case related to these corruption allegations. The investigations are ongoing, and further actions may be taken based on the findings.

The arrest of Dr. Sandeep Ghosh marks a significant step in addressing corruption within the medical and administrative sectors in Kolkata. The CBI’s actions underscore the seriousness of the allegations and the need for accountability in public institutions.
