Kolkata Doctor Rape and Murder Case: How Did the Crime Unfold? A Detailed Timeline

Kolkata: Hospital services across West Bengal were significantly disrupted on Monday as medical professionals continued their protests over the horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor at a government-run hospital in Kolkata last week.

Interns and postgraduate trainees at state-run medical institutions throughout the state have joined the ongoing agitation, standing in solidarity with the junior doctors who initiated a cease work at the hospital where the crime occurred. Now entering its fourth day, the protest will persist until those responsible are brought to justice.

The semi-nude body of the 31-year-old female postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered on the morning of August 9 inside a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The brutal crime has sparked nationwide outrage and demands for swift action.

Following an initial investigation and a review of CCTV footage from the hospital premises, Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer named Sanjay Roy, who later confessed to the crime.

Roy, who was apprehended in an intoxicated state outside the hospital, has been remanded to police custody until August 23. In response to the incident, several high-ranking officials at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have been suspended for negligence.

August 5-8: Sanjay Roy traveled to Salua in Kharagpur to attend a Police Welfare Society meeting. He remained there from August 5 to August 8, claiming he was on duty as a civic assistant.

August 8, Morning: Upon returning to Kolkata on the morning of August 8, Sanjay Roy visited RG Kar Hospital, where he worked as a broker, to assist in the admission of a patient. After ensuring the patient was admitted, he left the hospital but returned later that night.

August 8, Night: Around 11 pm, Sanjay returned to RG Kar Hospital to help the same patient with an X-ray. After spending some time with the patient’s family, Sanjay left the hospital.

August 9, Early Hours: Sanjay came back to the hospital around 1 am to assist another patient whose surgery was scheduled. After helping this patient, he remained on the hospital premises, where he consumed alcohol with one of the patient’s relatives behind the hospital building. He also provided financial assistance to the patient’s family and arranged transportation for them.

August 9, 3 am: At approximately 3 am, Sanjay went to the third floor of the Chest Medicine building at the hospital. He then entered the seminar hall where the female doctor was resting. It was there that he allegedly raped and murdered her, leaving the hall after about 40-45 minutes.

August 9, 4:30 am: CCTV footage captured Sanjay leaving the hospital premises at around 4:37 am. He then returned to his barrack and went to sleep.

Later that Morning: After reviewing the CCTV footage and observing Roy's suspicious activities, Kolkata Police detained him from his barrack and brought him back to the hospital for questioning.

August 9, Evening: Following an extensive interrogation, the police officially arrested Sanjay Roy on charges of rape and murder in connection with the crime.
