Delhi AIIMS Resident Doctors Association Ends Strike

The Resident Doctors Association (RDA) protesting against the horrific rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata has announced an end to their 11-day strike following assurances from the Supreme Court. The strike was called off by the Resident Doctors Association of Delhi AIIMS after the Supreme Court's intervention. A nationwide meeting of the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) is currently underway, where a decision on ending the strike may also be made.

The Supreme Court has directed the Secretary of the Ministry of Health to coordinate with the Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police (DGPs) of all states to ensure the safety of doctors across the country.

The Tragic Incident

On August 9, a female doctor was brutally raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital, leading to widespread outrage and protests by the medical community. The Supreme Court has assured the protesting doctors that no action will be taken against them for their demonstrations.

Patients’ Care is Our Priority

The Supreme Court has urged the protesting doctors to resume their regular duties, emphasizing that justice and medical care must not be hindered. The Resident Doctors Association, while calling off the strike, stated, "Following the Supreme Court's appeal and assurance, we are returning to work. We appreciate the court's guidance and will comply with its directives. Patient care remains our top priority."

The Supreme Court has also directed the Ministry of Health to create a portal where suggestions regarding the safety of doctors can be submitted to the National Task Force, which was formed to address this issue.

Formation of National Task Force

Taking suo motu cognizance of the Kolkata incident, the Supreme Court convened a hearing on Thursday. The bench, comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice J.B. Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra, had earlier constituted a National Task Force to ensure the safety and welfare of doctors and healthcare professionals across the country. The task force is expected to develop a national protocol to address these concerns.

Criticism Over Delay in FIR

The Supreme Court expressed strong criticism of the state government for the delay in registering an FIR in the Kolkata case and for allowing large-scale vandalism at a government facility. The court termed the incident as "horrific" and highlighted the national interest in ensuring the safety of medical professionals.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has decided to file an intervention application in the Supreme Court regarding the suo motu case on the Kolkata incident. The IMA is also preparing to present documents before the National Task Force and has voiced its support for the Resident Doctors Association (RDA).

In a letter to the Union Health Minister, the IMA emphasized the urgent need for legislation to address violence against doctors. The IMA also announced that separate teams are being formed to brief the task force members on the issue.

This decisive action by the Supreme Court and the IMA reflects the growing demand for better protection and working conditions for doctors across India.
