Lucknow: Former Minister's Son Slashes Wrist, Locks Himself in Room; Rescued by Police After Breaking Door

A shocking incident has come to light from Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh. Police saved the life of Upkar Singh, son of former BSP minister Ram Lakhan Verma, who attempted suicide. Allegedly under the influence of alcohol, Upkar Singh slashed his wrist and locked himself inside a room in his residence at Dalibagh, under Hazratganj Kotwali jurisdiction.

On receiving the input, a Hazratganj Kotwali police team hastened to the spot. There, they brought Upkar Singh into conversation. They broke down the door at last to rescue Upkar. It was taken directly to Civil Hospital as Upkar was injured gravely. His acts were allegedly caused by drunkenness, for which the cops reached in time to save the man's life.

Important Political Legacy of Ram Lakhan Verma

Ram Lakhan Verma hails from Ambedkar Nagar and is a towering political figure in the region. A native of Jalalpur, Verma was first into politics in 1982, winning his first District Panchayat election. In 1989, he contested and won his first Assembly election on BSP ticket, becoming a close and trusted ally of former Chief Minister Mayawati.

Verma was elected as an MLA for three continuous terms in 1989, 1991, and 1993. He was the Panchayati Raj Minister during Mulayam Singh Yadav's BSP-supported government, and when Mayawati was made Chief Minister with the help of BJP, Verma was one of those few ministers who took oath with her.

Decline in Politics and Consecutive Losses

Later, Verma left BSP and joined the Samajwadi Party. However, his political career went downhill as he suffered defeats in successive elections. He lost the Akbarpur Assembly election in 1996, the Sultanpur Lok Sabha election in 1999, and another Assembly election in 2002. Since then, Verma has been away from active politics.
