Lucknow High Court Cracks Down on Illegal Chinese Garlic Trade: FSDA and Government Under Scrutiny

Lucknow The Lucknow High Court has taken a firm stance against the illegal sale of Chinese garlic in Uttar Pradesh. In a hearing held today, the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) officials were summoned to explain the measures being taken to halt the sale of this banned product. The court also sought clarification from the state government on its efforts to prevent the circulation of Chinese garlic in the market.

During the session, officials from the Food Safety Department were called upon to present their strategies for controlling the unauthorized sale. The court questioned how the banned Chinese garlic continued to be sold openly in local markets, despite the prohibition.

Advocate Presents Evidence in Court

Advocate Motilal Yadav, representing the public interest petition, brought forward half a kilogram of Chinese garlic purchased from the Chinhat market as evidence. This sample provided the court with tangible proof of the ongoing illegal sales.

Public Interest Litigation Hearing and Verdict

The hearing was part of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Advocate Yadav, urging immediate action against the illicit garlic trade. The bench, comprising Justice Rajan Rai and Justice Om Prakash Shukla, expressed concern over the situation and directed the Food Safety Department to take immediate steps to curb the illegal inflow of Chinese garlic.

Inquiries to Central and State Governments

The court also questioned both the central and state governments, asking them to outline the systems in place to prevent the smuggling and sale of banned Chinese garlic. The High Court demanded that more effective measures be implemented to curb such illegal activities in the future.

Court Orders and Next Steps

In its order, the Lucknow High Court instructed the Food Safety Department to take all necessary steps to stop the illegal sale of Chinese garlic. The court emphasized the need for the governments to play a more proactive role and to enforce stricter regulations to prevent the further spread of banned products.

The court's directives have set a clear expectation for both central and state authorities to ensure tighter controls and enhanced vigilance, aiming to completely eliminate the sale of Chinese garlic in Uttar Pradesh.
