Kumbh Mela History: Mahakumbh 2025 Returns to Prayagraj After 144 Years
Kumbh Mela History: Mahakumbh 2025 will be held in Prayagraj from January 13 to February 26. Over 400 million devotees are expected to participate in this grand event, considered the world’s largest religious gathering. Held once every 144 years in Prayagraj, Mahakumbh carries immense significance for Hindus, featuring six royal baths during its duration.
The Significance and Mythology of Mahakumbh
The origin of Mahakumbh is rooted in the mythological story of the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) by gods and demons to extract the nectar of immortality (Amrit). According to legends, drops of Amrit fell at four locations: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. These places now host Kumbh Melas.
Mahakumbh holds unparalleled importance as it occurs only once in 144 years and exclusively in Prayagraj. While the Kumbh Mela takes place every 12 years, Mahakumbh is observed after 12 full Kumbhs.
Difference Between Mahakumbh, Kumbh, and Ardh Kumbh
Mahakumbh: Held once in 144 years, only in Prayagraj.
Kumbh Mela: Organized every 12 years in Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik.
Ardh Kumbh: Takes place every 6 years.
A Spiritual Event for Millions
During Mahakumbh, millions of devotees take a holy dip at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers, believing it paves the way to salvation. Large-scale preparations, including security, accommodation, and transportation, are undertaken to manage the massive influx of pilgrims.
