Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, a towering figure in Indian politics, passed away at the age of 92 on Thursday night. Singh, who was India’s 13th Prime Minister and the first Sikh to hold the esteemed office, breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. The news of his passing has plunged the nation into grief.

A Nation Mourns a Statesman

Dr. Singh served as the Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, leading the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. Known for his economic reforms and calm demeanor, Singh played a crucial role in shaping modern India’s economic landscape. His tenure marked significant policy changes, including the liberalization of India’s economy.

AIIMS released an official statement, confirming that Dr. Singh had been brought to the hospital’s emergency unit after experiencing a sudden loss of consciousness at his residence on December 26, 2024. Despite resuscitation efforts, he was declared dead at 9:51 PM.

“With profound grief, we inform the demise of Former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92. He was being treated for age-related medical conditions. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived,” read the statement.

Last Public Appearance and Legacy

Dr. Singh retired from active politics after the Congress faced a defeat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. His last public appearance was in the Rajya Sabha in August 2023, where he remained a member until his passing. His legacy as an economist and politician will be remembered for decades.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and several political leaders visited Dr. Singh’s residence to pay their respects. PM Modi described Singh as “a true statesman” and “a leader who dedicated his life to India’s development.” Home Minister Amit Shah called him “a guiding force in Indian politics.”

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge expressed deep sorrow, saying, “India has lost a visionary leader whose contributions to the nation will be remembered forever.”

Funeral Arrangements

Preparations for Dr. Singh’s funeral are underway. He will be accorded full state honors, and dignitaries from across the country are expected to attend the ceremony. His contributions to India’s political and economic fabric will remain a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.
