13 Dead, 100 Rescued in Mumbai's Gateway of India Boat Tragedy After Navy Speed Boat Collision

A tragic accident unfolded in the vicinity of Mumbai's Gateway of India, in which the tourist boat Neelkamal capsized after colliding with the Indian Navy speed boat. The accident occurred when Neelkamal, carrying over 100 passengers, was on its way to the Elephanta Caves. Among the victims were 13 people who were killed, including 4 personnel from the Navy, while 100 others, including 20 children, were rescued.
What happened?
The collision, allegedly due to a loss of control by the Navy boat, had inundated the ferry, leaving it to capsize near Butcher Island. Rescue operations were launched by the teams from the Navy, Mumbai Police, Coast Guard, and the local fishermen, who had arrived on the scene shortly after, using 11 Navy boats, 4 helicopters, and numerous rescue vessels to rescue the passengers onboard.

Eyewitness Accounts
Rescuers described the scene as heart-wrenching, with women and children struggling to stay afloat, screaming for help. Mumbai Port Trust's Arif Bamne, who led one of the rescue operations, called it the most tragic event of his career. Among those rescued was a young girl who was revived after water filled her lungs.
Government Action and Investigation
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis declared a ₹5 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased. Mumbai Police and the Navy are conducting an inquiry into the accident. Reports say the speed boat belonging to the Navy was undergoing engine tests when it lost control in the captain's hands.
