Muslim Family Sets Example of Brotherhood by Following Hindu Traditions at Sister's Wedding

Rajasthan: As an example of friendship and harmony, a Muslim family in Rajasthan depicted fraternal feelings by attending the Hindu marriage of his sister, Durgawati Kanwar. The family followed all the Hindu customs; it even came with gifts and jewelry, which actually reflected brotherly or sisterly love that never fades away nor loosens over time.
A Long-Standing Bond of Love and Respect
Muslim Family Sets Example of Brotherhood by Following Hindu Traditions at Sister's WeddingDurgawati Kanwar, who hails from Mod ka Nimbahera, lost both her parents when she was young and had no siblings. But she has a very close bond with Zakir Hussain Rangrej, a Muslim man from the same village, since childhood. Durgawati tied a rakhi to Zakir, making him her brother. Zakir promised that he would be always by her side, and indeed, for the marriage of her daughter, he brought for her Maira (a customary gift from the brother to the bride's sister) for her.
When Durgawati’s daughter’s marriage was planned, Zakir and his family made sure to keep their promise. Along with other members of the Muslim community, such as Haji Hanif Mohammed, Ghulam Nabi, and others, they arrived in a festive mood with dhols and nagadas. They not only brought the Maira but also danced and celebrated the occasion, joining in the joy of their Hindu family.
The Community’s Warm Reception
The Muslim family was grandly welcomed by the villagers and family members of Durgawati, thereby symbolizing the spirit of social harmony. The event ended with a flower shower, which again stressed the unity of communities.
This touching event is a reminder that despite religion and culture differences, humanity and love can transcend all boundaries and thus bring unity in diversity.
