Nagpur Violence: Fadnavis and Shinde Call It a Planned Attack

Nagpur Violence: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde have termed the recent Nagpur violence as a planned attack. Addressing the state assembly, Fadnavis pointed out that rumors about the burning of religious texts triggered the violence, while Shinde highlighted an unusual observation—a usually crowded area with 100-150 vehicles had none on the day of the incident.
What Led to the Nagpur Violence?
The unrest began after a right-wing group protested demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. Amid the protest, rumors spread about religious scriptures being burned, sparking widespread violence in the city. As a result:
Several homes, vehicles, and a clinic were vandalized.
Violent clashes erupted, forcing the imposition of a curfew in multiple areas.
The Maharashtra government suspects the violence was pre-planned.
What Did CM Devendra Fadnavis Say?
Speaking in the Maharashtra assembly, CM Devendra Fadnavis stated:
"The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal were protesting peacefully when false rumors about the burning of religious materials spread. This appears to be a pre-planned attack. No one will be allowed to take the law into their hands. The violent riots seem to have been strategically organized."
Fadnavis also confirmed that attacks on police will not be tolerated and that strict action will be taken against rioters.
Deputy CM Eknath Shinde’s Statement
Deputy CM Eknath Shinde also termed the incident "unfortunate", adding:
"Thousands gathered and targeted houses, vehicles, and even police officers. In Mominpura, an area where 100-150 vehicles are usually parked, not a single vehicle was there yesterday. The police are investigating whether this was a well-planned conspiracy."
Over 30 police officers, including 4 DCP-level officials, were injured.
Police vehicles were attacked, and public property was damaged.
Strict action will be taken against those involved in violence.
Shinde urged citizens to cooperate with the police and maintain peace.
Strict Action Against Rioters
The Maharashtra government has assured that strict legal action will be taken against anyone involved in rioting and attacks on police personnel. The administration is currently investigating whether the violence was pre-planned and who might be responsible for instigating it.
