In a candid confession, Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani revealed a deep sense of respect for a colleague he has worked closely with for decades-Narayana Murthy. Speaking to LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky, he spoke about the deep and abiding bond he shared with Murthy, who shaped Infosys and India's tech landscape. Recalling his first meeting with Murthy in 1978 as a defining moment in life.

Nilekani, an alumnus of IIT Bombay, reminisced about his initial reaction when he first heard about Murthy's venture. "When I heard about this mini-computer company, I said, 'Wow, this sounds exciting,'" Nilekani said. This initial spark of interest eventually led to the formation of Infosys in 1981, a company that would revolutionize the Indian IT industry.

In the interview, Nilekani has revealed the depth of his admiration for Murthy, saying that he had influenced his professional and personal life greatly. One person who played an important part in the whole process is Nilekani, of which he said regarding Murthy, "If he had asked me to jump off a cliff, I would have done it. Working with him was just an amazing experience." Of course, his words indicate the highest sense of respect and trust from him towards the man often seen as representing Infosys and an inspirational figure worldwide.

Recently, Narayana Murthy has been surrounded by controversies for his adverse comments about work culture in India. The recent statements involving a 70-hour workweek and the criticism of adopting a five-day work schedule in India in 1986 caused a lot of debate among industry leaders as well as professionals. Despite his critics, however, Murthy holds firm to his views on the importance of hard work: "I don't believe in work-life balance… I will take this with me to my grave."

For Nilekani, working alongside Murthy has been a transformative journey that laid the foundation for what Infosys is today. His admiration for Murthy is clear, as he continues to honor the role his former colleague and mentor has played in shaping his life and career. This profound relationship between the two founders of Infosys serves as a testament to the power of mentorship and collaboration in building one of India’s most successful tech companies.
