JAMMU AND KASHMIR – A non-Kashmiri citizen was wounded in a firing incident in Batagund, Tral, adding to a recent string of attacks targeting non-locals in the region. The injured individual was rushed to the hospital for treatment, and his condition remains under medical supervision.

This marks the third attack in the region within a week. The frequency of such incidents has reignited concerns about targeted killings in Jammu and Kashmir, despite a reported decline in organized terrorism in the area.

A Rise in Targeted Attacks

Earlier this week, a similar incident occurred in the Shopian district, where a man was shot dead. While organized terror activities have decreased, the region continues to witness targeted attacks on non-Kashmiris. Such incidents were also prevalent last year when multiple killings of non-locals occurred in Anantnag, Pulwama, and Poonch.

Previous Killings

The trend of selective killings resurfaced in 2023. In February, militants in Srinagar carried out an attack in the Habba Kadal area, killing two members of the Sikh community from Amritsar. The victims, identified as Amrit Pal and Rohit, were shot with AK rifles. In the same month, Kashmiri Pandit Sanjay Sharma was killed in Pulwama in another targeted incident. In May 2023, a resident of Anantnag was also shot dead by militants.

These attacks have raised fears among the non-Kashmiri population and local minorities, leading to increased security measures in vulnerable areas. However, despite efforts by security forces, the pattern of violence continues to plague the region, leaving civilians concerned about their safety.

A Renewed Security Challenge

The resurgence of targeted killings highlights the persistent security challenges in Jammu and Kashmir. While the region has witnessed a decline in large-scale militant operations, smaller, more targeted attacks have continued, leaving law enforcement with the difficult task of maintaining peace in an environment where fear lingers among non-locals.

Efforts are underway to track down the attackers and prevent further violence, but these recent incidents underscore the ongoing complexities in restoring long-term peace and stability in the region.
